A student of Zuarungu Senior High School is on the run after escaping from police custody with a magazine belonging to a police rifle, following violent ethnic clashes that led to the indefinite closure of the school.
The chaos began when a misunderstanding over a stolen mobile phone escalated into a brawl between students from two ethnic groups, resulting in injuries and property damage. The police were called in to restore order and arrested four students in connection with the disturbances.
However, in a shocking turn of events, one of the arrested students managed to flee while being transported by officers. According to reports, the student was not handcuffed and allegedly made away with a magazine from a police officer’s weapon during the scuffle.
Security agencies have launched a manhunt for the escapee, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Meanwhile, a committee has been set up to investigate the incident and make recommendations on the way forward. So far, 26 students have been shortlisted for questioning, most of them final-year students believed to have played key roles in the disturbances.
