10‑year‑old pupil drowns at Tetekope beach
The seaside community of Tetekope in Ghana’s Volta Region is reeling after a tragic accident claimed the life of 10‑year‑old Ericsson Lumor, a pupil of Norlivime Bishop Herman Basic School.
Witnesses say Ericsson and a group of friends ventured into the surf on Thursday afternoon, unaware of the strength of the tide. The waves pulled him away from his companions, who cried out for help. Fisherfolk nearby abandoned their nets and rushed into the water, but despite repeated dives, the boy could not be saved. He was later pronounced dead at Keta Municipal Hospital.
Residents describe Ericsson as respectful and hardworking, a child with promise whose sudden death has left families stunned. The incident has cast a pall over the town, just weeks before schools were due to reopen for the new term.
Local leaders are urging parents and guardians to intensify supervision and warn children against swimming in open waters without adults present. Opinion leaders stressed that stronger awareness is needed to prevent similar tragedies, especially along Ghana’s vulnerable coastal communities.
